Conservation Futures Program: Nature that is Near Perfect
Spokane County Parks logoOver a decade ago, the Spokane County Commissioners wisely chose to institute a local Conservation Futures Program (CFP) based on a model authorized by Washington statutes. Since then that program has been enthusiastically supported by the electorate. With it, Spokane County has created an admirable system of natural area parklands and urban greenways totaling over 4,000 acres.

As the program has matured, the County Parks staff and Park Board have become increasingly skilled at leveraging the CFP for our collective advantage. In just the last few years, the County used CFP dollars as “local matching funds” to secure at least $1 million of additional investment from outside sources.

The local CFP funds are attracting other state, federal, and private dollars that are prudently invested in our shared “green infrastructure,” and thus in the long-term preservation of this county’s great quality of life.

So, as the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce likes to say, with its scenic beauty, abundant wildlife, and high quality public recreation resources, Spokane is truly “near nature, near perfect.” And the Conservation Futures Program is helping to ensure that it stays that way for the benefit of all.
